MetOP-SG A1&B1 with Sentinel-5 at Airbus in Toulouse, France on 10 November 2023. MetOp-SG is Europe’s component of the Joint Polar System, which is a collaboration with the US. Eumetsat, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, operates the MetOp satellites and is responsible for developing the ground segment of the system and delivering the meteorological data to the world-wide user community. ESA is responsible for designing and manufacturing the space segment of the system – the satellites themselves. To be carried on the polar-orbiting MetOp Second Generation satellite, the Sentinel-5 mission comprises an Ultraviolet Visible Near-infrared Shortwave (UVNS) spectrometer and data from Eumetsat's IRS, the Visible Infrared Imager (VII) and the Multi-viewing Multi-channel Multi-polarization Imager (3MI) (4.8 km)˜. The Sentinel-4 and -5 missions will provide information on atmospheric variables in support of European policies. Services will include the monitoring of air quality, stratospheric ozone and solar radiation, and climate monitoring.
