The red planet appears blueish in this near-infrared Hyperscout H image from ESA’s Hera spacecraft, acquired during the mission’s 12 March 2025 gravity-assist flyby of Mars, taken from 6440 km from the surface. Some Martian features are highlighted in the image. Hellas Planitio is a huge plane within Hellas basin, one of the largest known impact craters in the Solar System with a diameter of 2300 km and a depth of more than 7 km. Next to it is the mountain range Hellespontus Montes, stretching more than 700 km. In addition, three prominent named craters are indicated. They are between 100 km and 170 km in diameter. Hera’s Hyperscout H hyperspectral imager observes in a range of colours beyond the limits of the human eye, in 25 visible and near-infrared spectral bands to characterise surface materials.
